Creature Comforts: Sculptural Installations
Dr. Martens
ZebZag Launch Event, AW25
A series of sculptural installations created for Creature Comforts, Dr. Martens' ZebZag boot launch event exploring the Art of Comfort. The work translates the ZebZag's design innovation—a softer sole meeting bold structure—into physical form, examining comfort as a conversation between opposing forces rather than the absence of friction.
The installations challenge the assumption that comfort must be uniformly soft or gentle. Through deliberate material pairings, they explore how roughness and ease can coexist, and possibly depend on each other. Plush foam and living moss—materials that yield and cushion—are placed in direct dialogue with rigid wire frameworks and sharp leucospermum blooms. The result is neither purely soothing nor entirely abrasive, but something more complex: a tactile investigation of how contrast creates meaning.
This approach mirrors the ZebZag boot itself, which reimagines Dr. Martens' iconic toughness through enhanced cushioning and unexpected forms, proving that comfort and strength aren't opposites but collaborators.
The installations were part of a larger experiential environment for the launch evening, where set design, floral sculptures, music, food, and table settings all followed the same material philosophy. Every element was designed to provoke the question at the heart of the ZebZag: What is comfort, and how do we experience it?
